  1. Great site! I will try to follow you guys. My mother’s side of family history tells of a distant cousin (can’t even remember his name) in Georgia Sharpshooter unit. Cannot remember which one. At one time we had, and unfortunately lost, a local news clipping telling of his illness with dysentery was sent home on medical leave and died. From Sylvania, Ga. area- Screven County.
    Thanks!

    • So sorry for your brave (Probably) Great Grandfather or Gr. Uncle. If only they all left a memoir.
My great grandfather died in New Orleans on board a hospital ship of dysentery. He was one of 4 brothers. I have always thought as they looked at the stars on a cool Summer night, that they dreamed the same dreams as we do. They felt the same passions. Family, Church, and Friends.
I was at Andersonville about 10 years ago. My Gr. Grand Uncle was there. He had fought that in the Battle of Plymouth, N.C., lost his right hand and sent to Andersonville. A couple of months later his brother in law was captured in the Wilderness, and sent to Andersonville. That is probably why they survived Andersonville. My Uncle got home okay, but his brother in law died of consumption and died at the hospital in Maryland.
Yes, my relatives were Union, but I think it was mostly their faith, and peer pressure that gave them the will to enlist. They would not harbor any ill will on anyone, I’m sure. My grandfather joined after his brothers. He would rather have stayed home with his wife and 2 young boys. His Brother Martin married his wife 6 years later and Ellen and Martin had 2 of their own. Dexter got home, and his wife died of TB, and as she was giving birth to his daughter. The baby had TB as well, and she didn’t last more than a few hours. Oh Boy, I can really get off track.
I’m sorry!!! I love all those souls that died during that time. The world hasn’t changed much, but for the good that it has changed, I’m grateful for.
